Total Knee Replacement Rehab

One of the ways that the owner of Peak Performance Physical Therapy, Joseph Sullivan, PT, OCS, CSCS (an HSS Credentialed Advanced Hip Clinician), uses to improve individuals rehab and health is with water-based therapy practices. With his years of experience working with patients from elite athletes with sports injuries to adults recovering from surgical procedures, he knows that aquatic therapy works wonders of his clients. After seeing the success of the technology in the HydroWorx 500 Series at their Lynbrook location, Sullivan chose to replace an existing product with the new HydroWorx 300 Series at their New Hyde Park, NY location.
We were able to sneak a peek at the product in action in New Hyde Park. One of their patients had a total knee replacement and they are using their new underwater treadmill and resistance jets to help with stepping ability, squatting ability and walking ability. They also use the warm water to enhance stretching because it helps to relax the muscles with less pain.
The value of the aquatic therapy is that he is also getting better results in his land therapy. Physical therapist Joseph Granger has noticed that using the underwater treadmill is helping to accelerate his rehab and get him better quicker than with land treatment alone.
Some of the exercises they are using in the HydroWorx 300 include:
- Walking with increasing speed (focus on increasing step length)
- Hip flexion
- Hip abduction
- Hip extension
- Squats
- Leg kicks (seated)
- Knee flexion and hold for 10 seconds
- Sustaining squats
