Research Shows HydroWorx Water Treadmill Exercise More Beneficial For Weight Loss Than Land Based Treadmill
Middletown, PA–HydroWorx, the company whose underwater treadmill system is to be featured on ’The Biggest Loser’ on October 25th, is taking part in a research project in conjunction with Texas A&M University and the Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance.
In the study, subjects trained for 12 weeks and were randomly assigned to the HydroWorx underwater treadmill or a land based treadmill to assess differences in training adaptations between the two means of exercise.
The preliminary results from the 16 subjects who have completed the training study, show important and beneficial responses from training on the HydroWorx water treadmill compared to responses from traditional training on a land-based treadmill. “Our DEXA analysis showed that those who trained on the HydroWorx treadmill gained lean body mass, lost fat mass, and reduced their android/gynoid ratio to a greater extent than those who trained on the land treadmill. On these DEXA measures, the HydroWorx training actually appeared to be superior to the land treadmill training” said Dr. Stephen Crouse Professor and PI, HydroWorx Research Project at Texas A&M.
Comparisons of caloric expenditure per minute on land and the HydroWorx treadmill also show an advantage in the water. Preliminary findings show the HydroWorx system at 5 mph burned 13.46 kcal/min vs. only 11.41 kcal/min on land – or a 10% increase in caloric expenditure.
In addition, research found that one of the primary advantages to the HydroWorx treadmill training is that these benefits are realized without major joint and muscle trauma that is often reported by those who train on land treadmills. “Our findings show that subjects prefer to exercise on the HydroWorx water treadmill over 4:1” Dr. Crouse said.
HydroWorx is fast becoming a staple in elite hospitals and rehabilitation facilities across the country. World renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews will also be a user of the HydroWorx 2000 in his newly designed Andrew’s Institute. Additionally, HydroWorx therapy pools are utilized in the rehab of US Navy Seals and athletes at Ohio State and the Pittsburgh Steelers among others.
HydroWorx was featured on the cover of the May 29th edition of Sports Illustrated rehabilitating Carson Palmer and will be featured as an ’un-traditional’ avenue for weight loss on NBC’s 4th season of ’The Biggest Loser’ on October 25th.
