Pittsburgh Steelers Make Great Season Decisions On and Off the Field

Middletown, PAThroughout history and this year’s NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have proven that they are one of the best football clubs in the League. Pittsburgh’s strive for perfection has also transitioned to their athletic training room. After the 2004-05 season, Pittsburgh upgraded their existing aquatic therapy pool to a HydroWorx 1000 Series Pool. The HydroWorx 1000 included an underwater treadmill, resistance jets, and underwater video and is one of five commercial and residential models produced by the company.

“Frankly it is better than we anticipated. I don’t think there is anything on the market that is better. I would enthusiastically recommend the company and the product to anyone looking for a therapy pool.” — John Norwig, Head Athletic Trainer Pittsburg Steelers.

The four-time Super Bowl champion Steelers are two games away from competing for their fifth Super Bowl title thanks to an thrilling win over the favored Indianapolis Colts and impressive play by second-year quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben, as he is known by the Steeler faithful, rehabbed on the HydroWorx 1000 earlier this year after a minor knee injury and resulting surgery.

HydroWorx’ trademark, an underwater treadmill, can reach 7.5 miles per hour and is built into the pool floor. By gradually decreasing the amount of water in the pool, the user can increase the amount of weight placed upon the injured joint.

HydroWorx pools are gaining favor among some of the nation’s top trainers. Injuries are a significant issue for all sports teams. By rehabilitating in the nearweightless environment of an underwater treadmill, athletes recover faster many top trainers say.

The LSU Tigers and this year’s National Champion, Texas Longhorns, also emphatically agree. Each collegiate team upgraded with a brand new HydroWorx underwater treadmill pool in their respective training facilities.

“With our HydroWorx pools, we have greater functionality than we had previously. The versatility we can achieve with HydroWorx takes our athletic training to a new level.” — J Allen Hardin Co-Director of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, University of Texas.

Nike’s Oregon Project, overseen by running legend and Nike team coach Alberto Salazar, supplements land-based running on the underwater treadmills. In addition, over 180 HydroWorx pools have been sold to professional and collegiate sports teams throughout the United States and nine countries.
