Multiple Sclerosis Case Study from Perform at St. George’s Park

St. George’s Park, located in the heart of England is the home of the new National Football Centre and much more! This center is the training base for the 24 England teams and features a Hilton and Hampton Hotel. Additionally, the football centre includes a full-sized indoor football pitch, a 60m by 40m multi-purpose indoor sports hall, 11 full size outdoor pitches and one elite DESSO training pitch-which is an exact replica of Wembley.

As if that wasn’t enough, Perform, a part of Spire Healthcare, at St. George’s Park, is a sports medicine, rehabilitation and performance-centered service. Perform combines 25,000 square feet of cutting edge technology, including a HydroWorx 2000 Series pool, with elite medical expertise, creating the most advanced sports medicine, rehab, and performance science and training center in the UK.

Perform also opens its doors to the community for individuals who need physical therapy, aquatic therapy or general healthcare attention. One specific example is a 61-year-old client with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Due to her weakness in her left upper and lower limb, she utilized a cane to walk around.  She came to Perform to receive treatment for her pain, but was assessed first, in order to measure the progress.

The initial assessment showed that Her static pressure (measures weight distribution when standing), was 40Hz for 10 seconds over 3 different trials and she was carrying approximately 73% of her body weight on her right side.

This patient was treated in the HydroWorx pool on the underwater treadmill, focusing on gait re-education and exercises, backward walking and squatting. The underwater treadmill was chosen as the primary rehabilitation tool because it reduced body weight, provided instant feedback from the cameras and allowed for controlled speed. Land exercises were also incorporated into the entire rehabilitation program, but the underwater treadmill in the pool was utilized more frequently.

Results: As a result of her aquatic rehabilitation program, this patient was able to stand and function more symmetrically.
