Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Requests HydroWorx

Ty Pennington and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition have officially come to central Pennsylvania, and Middletown-based HydroWorx has been asked to contribute to their life-altering project.

The family of Brian Keefer is the recipient of a fully renovated residence, which will be completed in one week. Keefer is a young York County man whose life was forever changed by an accident that left him a quadriplegic.  Since his tragic injury, Brian has been working with professionals at the International Center for Spinal Cord Rehabilitation at Kennedy Krieger Institute, Baltimore, Md.

Kennedy Krieger uses innovative aquatic therapy methodologies for the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries. Familiar with HydroWorx, a manufacturer and seller of underwater treadmill pools, underwater treadmills, and peripheral products and services, the staff at Kennedy Krieger suggested Extreme Makeover: Home Edition contact HydroWorx for the Keefer project.

Christy Sachs, Adapted Aquatics Manager at Kennedy Krieger, says the HydroWorx pool is a fundamental part of Brian’s therapy: “The first time Brian got in the HydroWorx pool, he was able to raise his arms higher than ever before. Because of water’s assistive properties, Brian experienced freer movement than he could on land. We can adjust the height of the water, which allows Brian to transition from sitting to standing. The therapy jets challenge Brian’s sitting balance, which has improved so much since his first sessions. And, once Brian masters a skill, these adjustable features allow for greater challenges that promote further progress.”

Sachs describes the reaction at Kennedy Krieger upon being contacted by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  “Brian inspires all of us with his unwavering hope, his perseverance, and his continuing success—something in which the HydroWorx pool has played a crucial role,” she says. “The pool offers many unique features that make Brian’s aquatic therapy sessions successful. The convenience of having daily access to a HydroWorx pool is vital to Brian’s ongoing rehabilitation. Moreover, the feeling of freedom that Brian experiences is priceless. That’s why, when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition approached us, we knew we wanted Brian to have the very best.”

Anson Flake, president of HydroWorx, is thrilled that his team has the opportunity to join the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project.  “Since the day we opened our doors, we have stood by a philosophy of ‘giving back’.  It’s an important part of our culture – our people are devoted to helping those who can benefit from HydroWorx products.”

Adds Flake, “Every day, thousands of people around the world use HydroWorx technology to recover from injuries and health conditions.  We’ve seen and heard remarkable stories and look forward to following the Keefer family after the cameras stop rolling.”

A HydroWorx Therapy Series Model will be installed this week with the assistance of HydroWorx employees, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition staff and community volunteers.  Pictures and descriptions of this pool and other types of HydroWorx pools can be found at https://www.hydroworx.com/products/.  The Central Pennsylvania episode is scheduled to air in September.
