Vereen Center Celebrates Two Years Of Growth, Innovation

In Vereen Rehabilitation’s Center’s two-year existence, the regional medical center has increased rehab patient volume over 200% through championing a robust aquatic therapy program, providing a full range of therapeutic services, launching a sports medicine program which now services seven area schools—including 110 varsity teams—and even hosting to a weekly TV show.

“These first few years have been extremely exciting for us,” said Scott Rominowski, Director of Physical and Occupational Therapy for the Vereen Center. “We had an ambitious plan to better serve the folks in our community and we’ve done this through a series of innovative approaches.”

One such approach was developing the area’s premier aquatics program with a HydroWorx 3500 Series warm water therapy pool, complete with integrated underwater treadmill and resistance jets.

“Our state-of-the-art therapy pool is our premier rehab modality and helps us stand out to all of our market segments,” stated Romanowski. “When folks get injured or undergo surgery, they often hurt themselves trying to immediately return to their previous level of activity and that’s frustrating for them. The HydroWorx pool gives us the ability to start them out doing their normal exercises, but in a safe, pain-free environment. And it works for the entire spectrum of patients.”

The rehab center also offers a variety of treatments including physical, occupational, speech and aquatic therapies, as well as a wound-care clinic and a learning center. Members of the Vereen team also contribute regularly to In the Game magazine as part of the “Ask the Expert” column, promoting health and wellness by providing health tips and rehab techniques—especially aquatic therapy—through social media. They do this, says Rominowski, because they’ve seen water help patients with chronically swollen joints who, on land, tend to develop biomechanical abnormalities.

According to Rominowski, “We can get people away from developing a limp by getting them in the pool, using the underwater camera, letting them see what they are doing wrong in real time. We save ourselves work down the road because we don’t have to unlearn bad habits.”
