Increasing Balance and Mobility with Innovative Aquatic Exercises

Topic of Free Webinar from ICAA and HydroWorx

As humans age, they typically become more susceptible to falling.  Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that in any given year, approximately one third of all persons 65 and older will fall.  Perhaps more startling is the additional statistic that among those in that same senior age group, falls are the leading cause of death by injury.  And even if falls aren’t fatal, they can cause traumas such as bone fractures, which can seriously impact quality of life for men and women.  Fortunately, physical therapists, fitness experts and other health professionals can assist those under their care who have fallen or at risk of falling through innovative aquatic exercises.

To shed light on some of the most proven, modern techniques to combat the risk of falls, the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and HydroWorx, the leader in therapy pools with underwater treadmills, are offering a free webinar entitled “Creative Aquatics Programming to Improve Balance & Mobility” on May 30, 2013.  The one-hour online event will begin at 1:00 p.m. EDT, and will present an array of aquatic techniques and exercises that professionals can use to help individuals achieve better coordination, balance and agility.

“Creative Aquatics Programming to Improve Balance & Mobility” will cover topics including:

·         How to implement exercises with a variety of low- and high-tech tools.

·         How to use intervals to share a single piece of equipment among multiple aquatics exercisers.

·         How to add more excitement to personal trainings, small group sessions and/or larger group, interactive classes.

“Creative Aquatics Programming to Improve Balance & Mobility” will be led by veteran instructors and older adult fitness visionaries Kim Eichinger and Teresa Rudy.

Eichinger, the Executive Director of Fitness for Country Meadows Retirement Communities in York, Pennsylvania, is a certified fitness professional with 30 years of experience designing and leading exercise programs.  For the past 15 years, she has been committed to promoting senior fitness and wellness.

As a result of her expertise and stellar reputation, Eichinger has received a national “Best of the Best” award from the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) and an Innovator Award from the ICAA.  Kim can also be seen on a HydroWorx underwater treadmill in this informative video.

Rudy is the Aquatics and Fitness Director at Country Meadows of Leader Heights, also located in York, Pa.  A licensed pool operator, she manages the retirement community warm water HydroWorx pool which serves a public membership of over 150 older adults in addition to the residents of Country Meadows.  Rudy has been recognized by the Arthritis Foundation for her many community contributions.
