When considering integrating an aquatic wellness pool into a new facility, there are many things on which to focus: When does the pool get placed? How big should the room be? What does traffic flow look like? Fortunately, the team at HydroWorx has assisted in hundreds of pool room designs and has learned some valuable tips along the way.

Designing an Aquatic Therapy Room

With HydroWorx’s experience, we have compiled some top tips to ensure designing an aquatic therapy room runs smoothly and efficiently.

Here are a few things we’ve learned that can make a hydrotherapy space functional, safe and comfortable!

1. Strategically Place Locker Rooms

Having locker rooms in close proximity to the pool area allows patients to change comfortably, accessing the pool without passing through high-traffic areas. Connecting the pool entrance to the locker rooms is the most ideal setup, but sometimes it isn’t possible given the space available to work with. If direct access to a locker room is not possible, consider adding a rinse shower and a small changing room in the pool area.

2. Provide Adequate Airflow

Adequate airflow in the pool room helps maintain a comfortable environment. Most pool rooms are kept around 85 degrees to minimize the variance from air temperature to water temperature.

Also, providing adequate air exchange in the mechanical pit is important for the long-term performance of the equipment. Installing a dehumidifier can eliminate moisture buildup during routine draining and service procedures.

3. Create a Designated Storage Area

When designing this space, save plenty of room for all the equipment clinicians need in the pool — including pool toys, water shoes, water weights and more. Install waterproof shelving or build a storage closet for dedicated storage.

4. Make Mechanical Equipment Accessible

Technology and mechanical equipment can require regular maintenance to keep them running much longer. When repairs are needed, equipment should be easily accessible.

An access hatch, removable side panels or stairways are a few design options to provide the required access to the mechanical equipment. Certain equipment — such as the filter, heater, chiller and pumps — can be remotely located to save space and protect it from moisture. HydroWorx can review the design layout to ensure proper performance and longevity of the equipment.

5. Install an Effective Drainage System

Pools require regular cleaning to reduce bacteria and keep them running as they should. To do this efficiently on a regular basis, incorporate an adequately sized sump pump or floor drain into the design to keep the cleaning process simple and quick.

6. Add Proper Lighting

When deep water and slippery surfaces are present, safety comes first. Hanging proper lighting can help with easy mobility on the pool deck as well as in the water.
