And the winner is…
Last week during the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association, the first and second place winners of the first ever Healthcare Excellence in Aquatics Award were named. This award was created to recognize clinicians who achieve exceptional rehabilitation results through the use of advanced water therapy.
We had a great turnout for the after hours event where we had clinical experts share their experiences with integrating and utilizing aquatic therapy. At the conclusion of the presentations, Anson Flake, HydroWorx’s Co-Founder and CEO, announced the first and second place winners for the Excellence in Aquatics Award.
The four nominees were:
- Leg Up Farm for Helping a Pediatric Patient with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Reach His Goals
- Premier Rehabilitation’s Brad Stuckey for the Inspiring Rehabilitation of a Lumbar Spinal Fusion Patient
- Pullman Regional Hospital for the Innovative Therapy Program for a 3-year-old Patient Recovering from a Brain Tumor
- UP Rehab Services for the Remarkable Recovery of a Quadriplegic Patient
There were over 2,300 votes online, which counted for one overall vote. There was also a panel of 6 judges who each placed their votes, making a total of 7 votes. And the first place winner of the 2015 Healthcare Excellence in Aquatics Award and recipient of $1,000 was awarded to:
Pullman Regional Hospital for Their Innovative Therapy Program for a 3-Year-Old Patient
Therapists, Ambyr Henderson and Tim Williams combined their speech therapy and physical therapy efforts in their HydroWorx pool and the results were amazing! Both Ambyr and Tim were present at the trade show to accept this award.
Timothy Williams upon accepting the award:
“We just got our HydroWorx pool in November, when we started seeing patients. Ambyr is actually a speech therapist and I am a physical therapist. We looked at a little patient of ours, Jackson who is a little boy who had a brain tumor. Both of us felt like we were getting to a plateau level with him and thought, ‘Hey we need to try the pool.’ We then combined speech as well as physical therapy in the aquatic environment, and we saw immediately on that first session increased amplitude in his movement.”
Ambyr Henderson talking about speech side of things:
“So with him we were working on projecting his voice, articulating different sounds, increasing the amount of words he was saying and within that first session, like Tim was saying, there were immediate results! I had the best amplitude and voice I have ever seen in him [when he was put in the pool] and I have been working with him for about a year. He was saying longer sentences and being more spontaneous….it was just excellent! We are now expanding that concept to work with more patients in the pool for both speech therapy and physical therapy.”
We are already looking forward to next year’s Healthcare Excellence in Aquatics Award! Start making note of any amazing rehab stories you might want to submit in the fall.
