One man’s hope grew out of another man’s suffering. Out of a freak childhood accident. Out of a frightening moment in a middle school gym, a heavy medicine ball, a hard throw to seventh-grader Paul Hetrick that slammed his head against the wall and fractured his skull.

Confined to a wheelchair, unable to move his legs, Hetrick was lucky to know a couple who owned an outdoor swimming pool called the Hummelstown Swim Club. The wife was a firm believer that water could heal; the husband drove Hetrick to the pool in the mornings. The freedom Hetrick felt in the water, free from his wheelchair, was exhilarating, and the swimming made him stronger. Nine months later, he climbed out of his wheelchair, and walked again.
